In all, Edmonton has over 460 parks. The 48-kilometre long city stretch of the North Saskatchewan River alone has 22 major parks. It is the largest expanse of urban parkland in North America. The links below point to the City of Edmonton website which has all the information on city parks.

Sandbar hikers in the River Valley Approximately 21 times larger that New York City's Central Park, Edmonton's River Valley is the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America. Hiking and biking, in-line skating,cross-country skiing, fishing, picnicking, kayaking and golfing, the river valley offers a diverse range of outdoor recreation opportunities.

Valley Zoo Entrance

The Valley Zoo is located in the heart of the river valley and is Northern Alberta's only accredited zoo. The zoo is owned and operated by the City of Edmonton and is open 364 days a year only closing on Christmas. It is home to over 300 exotic and native animals of over 30 different species. The zoo features numerous animal enclosures which are arranged according to their needs with warm tropical animals indoors and native and exotic cold weather animals outdoors.The Valley Zoo is located on Buena Vista Road and 134 Street. Fort Edmonton Park represents four distinct time periods, exploring Edmonton's development from a fur trade post in the vast Northwest, to a booming metropolitan centre after the First World War. The park features over 75 structures many of which are the originals. Costumed interpreters operate the site and help recreate the past. Visitors can explore each building, each room, and talk to the 'inhabitants'. The Park offers free steam engine train and streetcar rides, as well as period rides such as wagon, stagecoach, pony and buggy rides. The park is open to the public daily from the May long week-end to Labor Day and is located on the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River just below the Quesnell Bridge in west Edmonton.

The Muttart Conservatory

The Muttart Conservatory is nestled in the river valley and features more than 700 species of plants in arid, temperate and tropical climates. It consists of three unique glass pyramids, each with its own climate, tropical, temperate, and arid and a fourth, the Show Pyramid which is changed completely about six times a year. Each display features flowering plants that create seasonal celebrations of living colour. The Conservatory is located at 9626-96A St. Phone: (780) 496-8755
